The paper deals with analysis of chip formation and related aspects of the chip formation as chip thickness, chip thickness ratio, shear angle and chip segmentation during turning hardened steel 100Cr6. The paper draws a comparison of some aspects of the chip formation between turning roll bearing steel in the annealed and turning roll bearing steel in the hardened state. The results of the analysis show that there is the formation of a segmented chip in the case of hard turning. This process of the chip formation significantly affects all parameters related to the plastic deformation in the cutting zone. Moreover, the formation of the segmented chip causes the instability of a cutting process, the high intensity of tool wear and the generation a lot of heat in the cutting zone. That heat causes generation of a high temperature in the cutting zone (the thermal load of a cutting tool).
